Portsmouth residents and visitors can enjoy complimentary bus travel across the city every weekend throughout September 2025, thanks to a collaboration between Portsmouth City Council and local operators First Bus and Stagecoach for the popular initiative.
The free weekend travel scheme will run on Saturdays and Sundays throughout September, covering 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28 September. The offer applies to all bus services when journeys begin within Portsmouth’s boundaries, though return trips from outside the city are not included.
The scheme forms part of Portsmouth’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), designed to revolutionise public transport across the city. Alongside the fare-free weekends, passengers benefit from additional BSIP-funded improvements including the Pompey ticket range, new routes, increased service frequency, and extended operating hours with some 24/7 services.
Enhanced bus services represent a crucial element of the council’s broader strategy to improve citywide transport for all residents.
September coincides with national Catch the Bus Month, promoting bus usage and celebrating sustainable, inclusive transport options. Local people can capitalise on free travel to visit shops, restaurants, attractions and events including this year’s LOOKUP Street Art Festival on 13-14 September.
Cllr Peter Candlish, Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, commented: “After previous years’ success, I’m thrilled we’re again providing free weekend bus journeys for everyone in Portsmouth throughout September. Bus travel offers convenience and affordability whilst reducing congestion and improving road journey times for all users.
“We’ve witnessed a 17% increase in bus passenger numbers over the past year and want to encourage more Portsmouth residents to choose buses. Whether you’re a regular traveller or new to bus services, this presents an ideal chance to experience how straightforward and accessible bus travel can be.”
Simon Goff, Managing Director at First Bus South, stated: “We’re delighted to partner with Portsmouth City Council again, making September weekend bus travel complimentary. This initiative always provides an excellent opportunity for people to try buses, whether for shopping, leisure, or attending wonderful local events like the LOOKUP Street Art Festival. We hope it inspires more residents to discover bus travel’s convenience and affordability.”
Marc Reddy, Managing Director at Stagecoach South, added: “We’re extremely pleased to collaborate with Portsmouth City Council and fellow operators, delivering free weekend bus travel throughout September. This represents a brilliant opportunity for people to try buses – whether shopping, socialising, or enjoying the city’s numerous events. Buses offer convenient, sustainable, and inclusive travel, and we hope such initiatives will encourage more long-term bus usage. We’re dedicated to making local bus travel more accessible and appealing, and look forward to welcoming both new and existing customers aboard.”
