Williams: We Must Stamp Our Mark at West Brom

Jordan Williams is demanding a strong response when Portsmouth travel to West Bromwich Albion this weekend, following their disappointing home defeat to Norwich City after opening with victory at Oxford United.

The defender believes Pompey must demonstrate their quality at The Hawthorns against opponents who have secured consecutive Championship victories over Blackburn Rovers and Wrexham.

Williams reflected on the Norwich setback: “We started the campaign with a win, but last weekend’s result wasn’t what anyone wanted.

“We were caught by a couple of set-pieces early doors, though Norwich perhaps had some fortune after half-time and we deserved another spot-kick.

“It’s definitely something we’ll be keen to address when we’re back at Fratton Park – but also this Saturday.”

The full-back acknowledges the challenge ahead, with West Brom having enjoyed a perfect start to their season.

“You’ll face a stern examination wherever you travel in this division, and that’s definitely the case here,” Williams said.

“West Brom have begun really well, so we must impose our own style on the match.

“Swifty has been there previously and understands their qualities, so I’m confident he can highlight a few areas for the boys to monitor.”

Williams is eager to maintain regular first-team football after hamstring problems disrupted his progress last campaign.

“Hopefully those issues are now resolved and I can focus on enjoying my football at Pompey,” he explained.

“We’re well-stocked at right-back, but that applies across the entire squad with players competing for starting positions everywhere.

“That’s precisely what you need when you’re a team targeting success in the Championship.”
