Portsmouth City Council’s leader has pledged support for veterans and encourages residents to join Help for Heroes’ ‘People’s Promise’ campaign at Gunwharf Quays, where visitors can sign commitment pieces until Saturday.
Help for Heroes has installed its Peace Puzzle at Gunwharf, inviting the public to make commitments on puzzle pieces towards creating a society that supports veterans and fulfils obligations to them. The display remains available for signatures until Saturday, 23rd August.
Council Leader Cllr Steve Pitt contributed his pledge to the installation, reaffirming the council’s commitment to maintaining the Armed Forces Covenant of which it is a proud signatory.
Upon making his commitment, Cllr Pitt stated:
“Our Armed Forces community exemplifies resilience, expertise, and dedication. Numerous veterans successfully adapt to civilian life, making significant contributions to our communities.
“However, for those encountering difficulties, our support is essential. Portsmouth City Council therefore backs Help for Heroes’ Peace Puzzle initiative.

“In Portsmouth, we’re implementing concrete measures. We collaborate with organisations such as Veterans Outreach Support to assist those with complicated requirements. We actively recruit veterans, recognising ourselves as an employer that appreciates and understands their expertise.
“We advocate for the Armed Forces Covenant, ensuring veterans face no disadvantage when accessing public services. We work alongside health providers to promote Veteran Aware certification and trauma-informed treatment. Through occasions like Armed Forces Day, we cultivate community understanding and appreciation.
“This concerns respect. It involves acknowledging veterans’ contributions and ensuring assistance remains available when required.
“Collectively, step by step, we’re constructing a future where all veterans can achieve peace.”
The Peace Puzzle is located at Gunwharf Quays Central Square from Thursday, 21st August through Saturday, 23rd August. Individuals may also pledge online support to veterans.
