Man jailed eight years for boiling water prison attack

A man has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment after throwing boiling water over a fellow inmate at HMP Winchester. Dashiell Mahi, 26, caused serious burns to the victim’s face, neck and shoulder in the deliberate attack last September.

Mahi received his sentence on Monday 18 August at Winchester Crown Court, following his conviction for causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

A jury at Salisbury Crown Court found him guilty in June after a three-day trial.

The attack occurred on the morning of Sunday 3 September, 2023, when Mahi, formerly of North Road, Richmond-upon-Thames, entered the victim’s cell carrying a kettle filled with hot water.

After dousing the man in his 20s with the scalding liquid, Mahi began punching him as he lay on the ground until prison staff intervened.

The injured inmate required specialist hospital treatment for his burns.

Police investigations revealed that Mahi had concealed the kettle in a bucket before leaving his cell, then waited behind a shower block door prior to launching his assault.

The court was told of Mahi’s previous convictions for prison violence and sexual exploitation of a child.

Judge deemed Mahi a dangerous offender, imposing an eight-year sentence plus two years on licence.

Acting Detective Sergeant Matthew Chapman said afterwards: “This was a calculated assault on another prisoner that could have caused even more severe injuries.

“Despite Mahi’s denials, the jury clearly saw through the evidence presented that he was guilty of this attack.

“We work in partnership with prison authorities to ensure criminal behaviour is properly investigated and perpetrators face justice.

“This sentence ensures Mahi remains incarcerated for a considerable time rather than being free in our communities.”
